New Dodge Viper Coming in 2012

Back in early July, a rather sickly looking yellowish-brown mess of a Dodge Viper rolled off production lines. That was the last Dodge Viper that we'll see from this generation, and it left a rather bitter taste in the mouth. The official idea was to make it an earth-toned Viper--for what reason we don't know--but the thing came off looking like some large animal had taken a squatter directly over it. It was that bad.

Luckily, that Viper will be long forgotten when the next-generation model makes its debut. Reports of the new Viper have been heating up, and according to Autocar, Dodge has already shown the new supercar to a group of dealers at Chrysler's dealer conference in Orlando earlier this week.

As the story goes, Fiat chief Sergio Marchionne got through all the standard business--the average Dodges, Chryslers, Jeeps and Fiats that will be making their way to showroom floors--and then pulled out a little surprise to leave everyone in the room raising their proverbial lighters and chanting for more--the 2012 Viper.

Rumors indicate that the new Viper has received substantial changes on the inside and out, now resembling more of an upscale sports car and less of a track car. The car supposedly gets fully overhauled body work that gives it a more aggressive look. Oh, and it was shown in candy apple red, so you can begin to forget all about those tacky earth tones. According to the reports, Dodge movers and shakers were so enamored by the new design, they approved it within minutes of seeing it for the first time.

Last fall, when Dodge announced that Viper production was coming to an end, Dodge chief Ralph Gilles intimated that Dodge would take advantage of the Chrysler/Fiat relationship by working on the new Viper with no other than Ferrari. It was hard for car fans to avoid peeing themselves just a little. Unfortunately, the spilled urine looked like it was in vein because Gilles later clarified to Autoweek: "“They really know sports cars. We just want some advice. Ferrari is Ferrari, Viper is Viper.”

Autocar indicates this week that the Viper is being developed alongside with Ferrari, so maybe that "advice" is a little more hands-on than Gilles would have had us believe. At least that is what we're hoping.

The new Viper is said to be coming with the 8.4-liter V10 engine that enthusiasts have come to know, embrace and love like a son. The engine will get some Multiair technology courtesy of Fiat, and an entry-level V8 is also expected.

There's no indication of when those outside of company doors will get to see the new Viper, but we're thinking the North American International Auto Show in January would be as good a time as any.
