2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Yes Please!

The Mercedes-Benz Gullwing was an absolute classic. Perfectly proportioned, race-bred and shamefully German in the most Teutonic sense. Mercedes has resurrected the Gullwing with its new SLS AMG, a faithful recreation if ever there was one. Instead of following the lead of American manufacturers, who are digging up the sixties for their retro-rods, Mercedes has reached all the way back to the mid-fifties for its stylish reflection of the past.

And what a fancy thing it is! The dynamics of the original have been retained according to Edmunds Inside Line. A responsive V8 and proper weight distribution add up to an entertaining drive. The rear wing can be deployed and stowed manually by the driver. There are myriads of controls for the suspension and traction control, located on the brushed aluminum center console. The fanciness goes on. The AMG V8 is mounted aft of the front suspension architecture, the door sills are more intrusive than a Viper's, a seven-speed transmission, and there are even LEDs that alert the driver to the incoming red line. Guh, I am considerably impressed! It looks dynamite in red or silver also.

The first video is a short, pre-production teaser; the second features the ubiquitous lap of the Nurburgring, DTM wizard Bernd Schnieder at the controls. The SLS's engine note is sublime!
