Peugeot to Debut First Diesel-Electric Hybrid In Paris

Given the growing push by government regulators and automotive manufacturers toward cleaner, greener vehicles it's surprising that we had to wait this long to see a diesel-electric hybrid. Peugeot plans to debut the 3008 Hybrid4 at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The crossover hatchback features a diesel-electric powertrain that offers up to 62 mpg. The new car will launch in Europe next spring after its debut in October.

The 3008 Hybrid4 is based on Peugeot's 3008 hatchback. It is fitted with a 163-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine and a rear-mounted 37-hp electric motor. That combination provides a total output of 200 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Shifting for the diesel engine is provided by an electronically-controlled automated manual transmission. The electric motor is powered by a high-voltage nickel metal hydride battery pack. An 8 kW starter-generator on the engine provides start/stop capabilities and can deliver charging to the battery pack. The electric motor can charge the battery through regenerative braking.

The medley of efficient powerplants in the 3008 Hybrid4 provides for up to 61.9 mpg, while limiting emissions to 99 grams per kilometer on the European test cycle. The car is capable of all-electric driving at lower speeds, and includes four separate driving modes: Auto, ZEV (all-electric), 4WD and Sport. The ZEV mode requires sufficient battery power and offers all-electric driving. When acceleration dictates, the diesel engine will automatically kick in.

The car also includes a Distance Alert System designed to inform the driver if he's coming to close to the car in front based upon operating speeds, as well as Parallel Parking Assist and Hill Assist functions.

Inside, the 3008 Hybrid4 features a man/machine interface with a 7-inch color display. The interface provides the driver with key drive information such as battery power and hybrid drive system status. The interior also offers what Peugeot terms "multiflex" capabilities, with up to 1500 liters of storage space. In addition to the trunk space under the hatch, the 3008 Hybrid4 offers folding rear seats and a folding front seat that combine to offer a flat storage area from the tailgate to the dash.

The 3008 Hybrid4 will hit the European market in the spring of next year. Like so many things diesel and all things Peugeot, it won't be a green option for U.S. drivers. However, U.S. drivers attending the Paris Motor Show in late-September through mid-October will get a peek at the world's first diesel-electric hybrid.

Peugeot showed a concept version of the diesel-electric at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

The 2010 Paris Motor Show opens to the media on September 30 and October 1 and to the public between October 2 and October 17.
