Toyota Recalling 1.13 Million 2005-2007 Corolla and Matrix Models

The never-ending recall saga continues for Toyota as the Japanese automaker announced today that it will voluntarily recall 1.13 million Toyota Corolla and Matrix models for problems related to engine stalling. The most recent recall raises the grand total of vehicles that Toyota Motor Co. has recalled to 12.3 million globally and 10.5 million in the United States.

The recall will concentrate on engine control modules that may be defective. According to Toyota, the company received the first field report regarding the defective electronic control units in November 2005 and began an investigation in March 2006.

Toyota performed an upgrade to the control module in June 2007 and issued four technical service bulletins to dealers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently upgraded its investigation of the issue after receiving 1,101 complaints, including 6 accidents (one with reports of a minor injury) that allegedly occurred as a result of the stalling condition.

A Toyota spokesperson said, ”Cracks may develop at solder points or on the electronic component used to protect circuits against excessive voltage—in some cases stopping the engine while the vehicle is being driven.” Toyota also stated that before stalling occurs that check engine has been known to light up and drivers have reported “harsh shifting.”

Toyota states it has received 4,211 warranty claims in which the company approved replacement of the electronic control module.

Toyota reports that the module will be replaced at no charge to the owner as part of the recall; owners will receive notice in mid-September to inform them of the recall and then further notification will be issued when new auto parts are ready for installation.

Vehicles that are involved in the recall are 2005 through 2008 model year Corollas and Matrix models sold in North America. According to Steve St. Angelo, Toyota’s North American chief quality officer, “This recall is an example of our commitment to standing by our products and being responsive to our customers. Our goal is to help ensure that Toyota drivers are completely confident in the safety and reliability of their vehicles.”
