Kia's Conceptual, Four-Wheeled Bubble Coming to Paris

Kia previewed a new mini urban commuter concept this week that it calls Pop. A fitting name since the car resembles a four-wheeled version of the Pop-O-Matic bubble that every kid and former kid will recognize from the game of Trouble. Look at it from the top and it's hard not to want to give it a lil' pop. The new zero-emissions concept will make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show in late September.

In the purple and silver preview pictures, we can see an odd, otherworldly contraption that sports a rounded, futuristic look. The concept features a bulbous windshield that extends into a glass roof panel and capsule-shaped side windows that look more space age than automotive. The lines on the side and low door handles indicate that the doors open upwards--something that would continue the theme of the concept's spacy look. Up front, the Pop has a rather insect-like appearance with its extended fenders taking on the look of antennae or pincers and its multi-light headlamps giving it fly-like eye balls.

According to NY Times' Wheels Blog, the concept is a foot longer than the SmartFor Two. It's said to measure in at 118 inches (just under 10 feet). With that extra foot of length, Kia has managed to squeeze a third seat in back--just don't expect to do much grocery shopping with your two children.

From what we can see of the interior, there's a single bench for driver and front passenger. The curvy console appears to offer generous foot space on the passenger side. The purple and chrome motif of the exterior wraps seamleassly into the interior.

As far as powertrain and other specs, Kia has kept mum outside of revealing that it's an electric vehicle. The company has focused more on the car's mold-breaking design in its preview saying that the concept is "design-led" and it aims to bring “innovative design chic and dramatic styling to the city car segment.”

Kia will unveil the Pop on September 30, the first day of the Paris Motor Show. The show opens to the media from September 30 through October 1. It is open to the public from October 2 to October 17. Other big unveils expected at the show include new models from Lotus--including an Esprit replacement, the debut of the 2012 Land Rover Evoque, the introduction of the sporty Hyundai Veloster coupe and a redesigned BMW X3.
