SSC To Debut the 2nd-Generation Ultimate Aero TT Next Month

Shelby Supercars has been gnashing its teeth ever since Bugatti broke the world speed record last month. The American manufacturer is nearly ready to unveil its next-generation Ultimate Aero TT--a car that it's hinted could top the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport's 268-mph world record. After some planned private showings, the company put up a teaser website this week, indicating that the official debut will happen next month. Unfortunately, no specific date or time are given, but at least we know there are just a few weeks left.

SSC's site includes only a background teaser photo of the Ultimate Aero--a picture depicting a more rounded nose. The information offered is also kept to the barest of minimums. Here's the full breadth of the site: "The Next Generation is Coming Soon...", "September 2010" and "Because Life Begins at 250." Then there's some contact info for media and general inquiries. And my email got bounced back when I attempted to contact the media email. It's not much to work with, but at least we know when we'll be seeing more--in a general sense of the term "when."

The latest SSC saga began just days after the Veyron Super Sport rolled its way into the record books. The company released a statement congratulating Bugatti and turning attention over to its upcoming Aero.

The juicy bit reads: “[W]e’ve been working on a new project to debut before the end of the summer. Not much can be said at this time except that we’ll be upping the ante on all fronts. Having famed American designer Jason Castriota as our lead design enables SSC to reflect its engineer and performance in its aesthetics. It’s impossible for us to be more thrilled about having him on board and we’re anxious to show the world what we have up our sleeve.” A rather tame declaration of war, but the lines were drawn just the same.

The new Ultimate Aero was originally scheduled to debut earlier this month at the Museum of Flight in Seattle in front of a small crowd of VIPs. A forum post on TeamSpeed prior to the August 8 event indicated that it had been canceled for security reasons.

TeamSpeed member TommyJames explained: "We are going to have to postpone the SSC Ultimate Aero event at the Boeing Museum of Flight due to some unveiling security concerns. The new date will be sometime in September. Everyone who paid will be refunded their money and can again buy tickets once the new date is set. Sorry for the hassle, but we just couldn't make it work on the 8th."

No matter, picture taking was to be banned at the event anyway. SSC did show the Ultimate Aero at a private event in Pebble Beach, however.

The date and location of the unveil remain a mystery. If SSC plans to stick to its "before the end of summer," we can assume that it will happen within the first three weeks of the month. The TeamSpeed post, while not stating anything outright, gives the feel that SSC will stick to its original Museum of Flight location.

Wherever and whenever SSC makes the debut, the new Aero is expected to be even more slippery than the model that captured the world record of over 256 mph back in 2007. According to Autocar, production will be limited to just 12 units, and the price will be set between $800,000 and $900,000.
