RedLine TimeAttack 2010: Sebring International Raceway

Sebring is as historic a race track as there is in the world. True, it isn't Le Mans or Monaco, and Americans would most likely name Daytona, Indianapolis, or Talledega before they would Sebring; the fact remains, this former B-17 training facility is hallowed ground.

I love Daytona, very much, but it just doesn't have the same panache as Sebring. The luxury-suites at Daytona are named for companies like General Mills, Lowes, and Fed-Ex; the suites on the front stretch of the Sebring race course are named after Audi, Panoz, and Chapparal. There is an unmistakable difference in historic quality between the two tracks and the events they entertain. Daytona is an enterprise for generating cash-flow, Sebring International Raceway is a beacon of purity in an otherwise tainted marketplace . . .

And the RedLine Time Attack Series fits right in with the philosophies of Sebring, real or completely dreamed up by myself as I struggled to suppress my child-like giddiness, almost vomiting as I ran a trembling finger over the Armco barrier on Sebring's front straight. From this position I was looking at cement that has stood the test of time. Unaltered for nearly 60 years, the front stretch at Sebring is a sight any American-born sports car enthusiast has to take in, at least once, before they die. The RedLine Time Attack event, held between August 13th and 15th, afforded me more access to more parts of Sebring than I have ever had before, and for that I am thoroughly grateful to the event organizers and participants. I hope my home state and fellow Floridians were able to make them feel welcome, as I will be bitterly disappointed if the event does not return to Sebring next year. After viewing the images and reading the stories the AutoShopper was able to collect during this stunning production car-based race, you too will be champing at the bit for the 2011 RedLine Time Attack at Sebring International Raceway, in the middle of nowhere, Florida . . .

This post contains all of the random images that do not fit into the next three RedLine Time Attack posts that you will see on the AutoShopperBlog over the course of the next week. Before you are relieved of your reading duties, however, allow me to make a few notes . . .

- The organizers of this event, series Co-Founder and President, Nikolas Malechikos and Jackson Stewart, are two of the most personable individuals ever to put on a car race. Another person I have to mention is a dirty-blonde gentleman named Allan. I didn't catch his last name and I feel terrible because of it. Upon arrival at Sebring Sunday morning, Allan stopped his golf cart (he was in a serious hurry to observe tech inspections) and explained every detail of the event to me, including where my press credentials would get me, where Chris Rado's monster Scions were parked, and an enthusiastic verbal advertisment for the final Super Modified Time Attack later that day. He was cordial and extremly helpful, and I am truly sorry that I did not catch his last name. Now that I think about it, Allen might have been his last name. This guy deserves way more credit than my half-assed reporting is able to give him. Sir, I handed you a AutoShopperBlog leaflet out of the window of a blue 2011 Mustang; I would love to give you the credit you have earned by being the nicest 'race' official I have ever met. In my experience, race officials are usually too busy to be friendly or helpful. This is not the case with RedLine Time Attack events.

- The man-gushing just doesn't stop. Chris Rado, front-drive drag-race pilot extraordinaire, is in a word, Rad. Since he got bored making 1,000 bhp Scions go straight, he decided he would make a 1,000 bhp Scion turn as well. Make that two thousand horse Scion tCs. These cars are absolutely astounding, pictures just do not do them justice. More on Rado and his crew tomorrow, but for now, chew on this: At the 58th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring, Jorg Bergmiester, a Sebring veteran (Rado had never driven the full Sebring course before) took the GT2 pole with a time of 2:01.150. Bergmiester was behind the wheel of a thoroughly sorted Flying Lizard Porsche GT3 RSR, a car designed from the ground up to conquer Sebring. Many GT2 cars qualified with times worse than 2:20. Rado, in a FRONT-DRIVE (power means little when it is hampered by a dynamically inferior drive-train) Scion, turned a 2:16.585 lap time, and he was just effing-around during a practice session! Amazing stuff; full report, with many more images, to debut tomorrow.

- Honestly, I have never seen so many Nissan GT-Rs in one place. In reality there were only four or five of them, but to a Floridian kick who doesn't live in Miami, that number might as well be a thousand. Very cool car, that GT-R; a post featuring these beasts and some other random Nippon-Iron will show up Wednesday.

- Our final post on the 2010 RedLine Time Attack at Sebring will feature the tribulations of two incredibly resourceful participants, Turn-In Concepts and Jay Stoops, driving a Forged-prepped Nissan 370Z. Both of these vehicles had suffered catastrophic failures: Turn-In grenaded a built EJ25 and Stoops was a mere passenger as a broken suspension piece caused him to slide backwards into the inside Turn Seven Armco . . . at roughly 120 mph. Both cars were rebuilt and back on track Sunday, and both teams will be featured in an AutoShopper post.
