Tower Automotive To Be Featured in TheTransformers 3

According to the Business Journal of Milwaukee, the movie Transformers 3 was filmed, in part, in the city of Milwaukee at the site of Tower Automotive earlier this year.

The Milwaukee visitors bureau, Visit Milwaukee, announced that the Tower site, on the north side of the city, along with the Milwaukee Art Museum, will be featured in scenes from the upcoming movie Transformers 3.

A cast and crew of about 150 traveled to Milwaukee the week of July 12 to film what Visit Milwaukee calls "a pivotal scene" at the museum.

Why Tower Automotive? It has been predicted that the scene will be focused on automotive design, perhaps, of the new combat robots featured in the movie. Tower is one of the largest suppliers of metal structural components in the United States, and they offer a broad range of metal structures including stampings and complex body and frame assemblies for literally every major automotive vehicle manufacturer—a setting realistic enough for a movie about a plant that makes combat robots!

Director of the movie, Michael Bay, reportedly fell in love with the architecture of the Art Museum, with its grand entrance hall, and designer Calatrava’s postmodern interpretation of a Gothic cathedral, complete with flying buttresses, pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and a central nave topped by a 90-foot-high glass roof, a perfect venue for a futuristic setting of a movie.

Visit Milwaukee estimated the film will generate more than $1 million in local spending. A casting call will be held for local stand-ins and some lucky Milwaukee students expect to get hired as production assistants during filming. In addition to generating capital for the local community, the film is projected to provide valuable exposure for Milwaukee visitors attractions when it is released in July 2011.

Transformers 3 is the second recent major Hollywood feature to shoot in Milwaukee. Public Enemies, featuring Johnny Depp, was shot at various locations around the city in 2008.

''They are here because director Michael Bay fell in love with the Art Museum (the Calatrava addition) and wants to feature it in the film." Museum director Dan Keegan was quoted as stating, “We’re really excited to showcase the Art Museum in what will be one of the most anticipated blockbuster films for next summer; the film will give the venue worldwide exposure during our 10th anniversary celebration of the Santiago Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion.”
