BMW Announces Launch Of New SuperBike

Everyone knows that BMW has been well established in the marketplace on high performance imported cars for decades. The three letter acronym sparks interest and inspires car enthusiasts around the world. When it comes to BMW’s reputation in building high performance bikes there is not quite as much fervor from fans. All of that is seemingly about to change as BMW prepares to launch what the New York Times calls “the most significant motorcycle in 2010, an overachiever on the order of the M3 or M5.”

New York Times quotes Hendrik Von Kuenheim, BMW’s general director of motorcycles as saying “We must speak the language of the segment and follow the usual market standards. We will compete both on technology and price, and build a bike that will set new benchmarks and win an appropriate market share.”

Today’s press release, with a photo layout of the BMW S 1000 RR, gives detailed specifications that leave no doubt that the new Beemer flagship is an impressive motorcycle, described as “an absolute monster on the road.” The bike is crammed full of some of the most sophisticated and complex technology available; delivering a whopping 193 horsepower is just the beginning. To say that the S1000RR features traction control, fly-by-wire throttle management, variable engine mapping, or linked ABS braking seems a gross understatement. BMW has integrated all these systems in an intelligent way, focusing on the rider. "Rain" mode, for example, still gives the rider access to a 150 horsepower, but puts traction control and ABS (which can be switched on and off) at the rider's fingertips.

According to Motorcycle USA, “In a true sporting sense, BMW has dominated areas like adventure riding with its GS line and long-distance touring with the LT range; a purebred sportbike has always eluded the Bavarian brand, something that has perplexed us for years—until now—enter the 2010 BMW S1000RR.” Test riders were quoted: “no amount of terrible airline food or long layovers could stop us from riding the highly touted new machine.”

As far as speed is concerned The New York Times reports ” At a mega test, known as Master Bike (organized by Motociclismo magazine and held this year at a racetrack in Spain in February), of a collection of 15 expert riders from around the world, seven riders set their fastest lap times on the BMW, and the bike took the overall win by beating an impressive roster of entries.”

The purpose-built German superbike is set to hit showroom floors before the end of 2010; the price, a little over $14,000, was established by BMW in order to support the company's goal of capturing 10% of the market share this year.
