2018 Mercedes E63 AMG To Gain All-New Drift Mode
The Mercedes E63 AMG has already proven to be a very formidable performance sedan entry, especially with the addition of standard all-wheel drive. However, the engineers at Mercedes are always looking for new ways to make the E63 even better and have officially confirmed that it will be coming with an all-new drift mode for the 2018 model year.
Stealing a page from the Ford Focus RS and its own aptly named drift mode, the E63's version uses the standard all-wheel drive system to send 100% of the engine's power to the rear wheels which will allow enthusiasts to take full advantage of the E63's oversteering abilities. On paper, this system appears to operate in virtually the same way that the aforementioned Ford unit works. However, look for the E63's system to incorporate more computer aides as well as a greater range of driver adjustable settings to make it stand out from rivals, such as the BW M3 and the Audi RS4.
Power will continue AMG's recent push towards downsizing and will be provided by the familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 which makes 563 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque in its default configuration. Buyers that opt for the hotter "S" variant will be rewarded with 603 horsepower and 626 lb-ft of torque. The potent V8 sends its power through a nine-speed automatic transmission which is the sole choice available in the E63. Look for the all-wheel drive system to really make a case for itself when it comes to performance figures with the base E63 making the dash to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, while the "S" does the same feat in a slightly lower 3.5 seconds. In addition to its abilities as a straight line missile, Mercedes-AMG chief Tobias Moers promises that the updated E63 AMG will be just as capable in tight turns, that it will be able to conquer the challenging Nürburgring Nordschleife race course in even quicker fashion than its predecessor.
Look for the 2018 Mercedes E63 AMG to possibly make its debut at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in January, with pricing and more detailed information being released closer to its official introduction.
