Apple Considering Takeover Of McLaren?
Apple's efforts to build a self-driving vehicle, dubbed "Project Titan", has been shrouded in the high levels of secrecy that have come to define the Silicon Valley giant. However, a recent report, with information from the usual anonymous insiders, appears to suggest that Apple is possibly seeking to buy-out supercar maker McLaren in what could be a key boost for the project.
According to the report, Apple is interested in either buying the company outright for $1.95 billion, or undertaking a "strategic" investment in McLaren. The deal would include McLaren's F1 racing division since it is an offshoot of the McLaren Technology Group. The addition of McLaren would be a big boost to project since McLaren has extensive experience building vehicles with carbon fiber and lightweight aluminum. A secondary benefit is access to McLaren's McLaren Electronic Systems which has the real world data logging technology that is already in use on the company's racing vehicles, and could eventually see duty in Project Titan test vehicles.
The lone question here is how McLaren's influence will guide the project? McLaren is a deeply entrenched premium brand with road offerings that surpass $200,000. In contrast, Apple views itself as a higher-end electronics firm that tries to target mainstream buyers, something that could also be true for its vehicle project. While it will most likely not cost $200,000, the car could have a price tag closer to $150,000 which would cover some of the costs of engineering as well as the novel electronic technology that would be on board. This high price could allow Apple to raise the funds necessary to pursue future endeavors in this field, including stealing a page out of Tesla's book, and possibly create a smaller segment entry that will be designed to lure in more mainstream buyers that might not have the funds for a $100,000 car.
With the multiple layers of secrecy regarding the alleged deal, and Project Titan itself, look for more information to eventually emerge once Apple is formally prepared to unleash the fruits of Project Titan to the public. This could be several years, since Apple has so far remained quiet on the subject of Project Titan, and has not released any information about the car or a probable timetable for its eventual debut.
