Genesis Reveals U.S. G90 Pricing, Starts At $69,050
Hyundai's Genesis sub-brand made it clear that it wants to shake up the established players in the luxury car sales race, and the G90 sedan appears to be the sedan that could very well help them achieve this goal. A notable question was how much the G90 would cost here in the U.S., and whether it would, indeed, undercut its European rivals. Genesis has now released this information, which shows that the G90 will be more of a threat to the established sales order than first thought.
The range-topping flagship is a visual example of Genesis's commitment to luxury and quality; this is reflected in its $69,050 base price (which includes the $950 destination fee). The base G90 will come equipped with a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that sends 365 horsepower to all four wheels. For comparison, the Jaguar XJ's V6 makes only 340 horsepower and the Mercedes S-Class currently does not offer a V6 power plant in its engine lineup. Buyers who choose to add all-wheel drive to their purchase will see the price jump to $71,550, which is slightly higher than the $70,650 worn by the V8 rear-wheel drive model. The V8 all-wheel drive model serves as the pinnacle G90 offering; its base price is $73,150.
As stated earlier, Genesis is trying to position the G90 as a value-friendly alternative to established luxury car entries. While its base price is well above the Cadillac CT6, the G90 promises to offer more polish and higher quality than that model, and the base price is within firing distance of the Jaguar XJ model lineup. The gap between it and German offerings like the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, and the benchmark Mercedes S-Class is even wider, and could spur some buyers to go towards the upscale Korean offering. However, the G90 will have to overcome the edge that the German offerings have when it comes to reputation, quality, and prestige, which can be a very difficult thing for a relatively new luxury offering to do, especiallyh one new to the market luxury brand.
Buyers wondering whether the G90 does, indeed, have what it takes to hang tough with the established luxury car elite will have the chance to decide for themselves with their loyalty and their wallets when the G90 makes its way to showrooms later this month. The G90's arrival also spearheads a new model blitz by Genesis over the next several years; that will include entries for the CUV segment as well as possible performance versions of its models to help it fight models from AMG, BMW's M Division, as well as Cadillac's V-Series.
