Porsche Planning BMW X6-Fighting EV Entry
Porsche's plans for an electrically powered future could take an interesting turn; according to a new speculative article, a sleek SUV could be the second cog in Porsche's plan to aggressively attack the ever-evolving EV segment.
The currently unnamed model would share the bulk of its components with the production version of the Mission E concept car. This move will not only simplify the engineering that would be involved in creating the new model, it also allows the German car company to fully benefit from economies of scale. Select components would also come from the Audi Q6 e-tron as well as liberal dips into the Cayenne parts bin for key parts.
The SUV would stand out from the rest, thanks to a sloping roof line that would be very similar to that of the BMW X6; this translates into a design that would be a classic exercise in form over function. British publication Autocar predicted that the new model would fight in the same segment as the aforementioned Q6. This would be a solid indicator that the new model would not be in the same size bracket as the Macan, and would, instead, be closer to the bigger Cayenne which could help increase its appeal with customers wanting a large SUV for their driveway versus a less capable smaller offering with less room for occupants.
Autocar speculates that Porsche will debut this new model in the form of a near-production concept vehicle that would debut at a major auto show sometime in 2018. The production version would not arrive until a few years later, possibly arriving as early as 2020. This time frame would mean that the new model would hit showrooms a few years after the production version of the Misson E concept car. When it eventually lands in Porsche showrooms, the new model will face a formidable fight for sales, having to fend off similar challengers from Mercedes Benz and Jaguar which are also clamoring for a slice of the EV sales market.
At this point, there is a lot of 'ifs' to consider, including if the project will even get a green light, much less actually ever see the light of day.
