Bugatti Considers Second Model Offering

Bugatti has had a long storied history with the bulk of that history centered on a very small lineup usually consisting of one lone model. The Veyron has served as a recent example; the Veyron has the task of not only upholding its role as the pinnacle of Volkswagen's engineering and technology, it also holds the fortunes of the entire Bugatti brand on its shoulders. The upcoming Chiron was expected to continue where the Veyron left off in this regard, but it appears that it is about to receive a companion model, according to a new report from Australia.

Bugatti CEO Wolfgang Durheimer said in a interview with Australian website Drive that the company is exploring four different options for the upcoming new model. One of these options is a large ultra-luxury sedan which would be similar to the Galiber sedan concept which was first showcased back in 2009. Since its debut, the Galiber has teetered between viability and outright cancelation. If the Galiber program finally produces an actual production vehicle, it would compete with entries such as the Rolls Royce Phantom and the Bentley Mulsanne in the heated flagship sedan segment.

Durheimer stopped short of saying what the other three options are, but separate reports from Bugatti insiders suggest that the three options are an SUV, an electric model, and a smaller sports car offering. Regardless of which route Bugatti chooses, the new model will be a method for the French brand to draw customers to its showrooms though Bugatti will deny that it is pursuing mass volume, claiming that it would dilute the high levels of exclusivity that the brand is known for. For his part, Durheimer stated that he is openly advocating for the aforementioned sedan offering.

"I have some technological ideas for the next car, for the Galiber, that I was following up hard when I was at Bugatti the first time. I'm always walking around motor shows checking what the luxury field tells me, not only in terms of luxury, but in technology," said Durheimer when pressed on the subject by Drive.

This shift in direction marks a radical, and somewhat unexpected, change in focus which completely goes against what the French brand said a year ago when it claimed that the Galiber was axed once and for all, and that the notion of a Bugatti SUV was systematically ruled out. It will be interesting to see which route Bugatti chooses for its new model with each choice taking the brand into uncharted territory. The SUV, in particular, would be a major event in the brand's history, and would be the first time that Bugatti has constructed an SUV. According to the report, Bugatti executives are expected to choose which model they will pursue in the coming months.
