Mecum auction coming to Louisville

People who love cars are invariably going to enjoy road trips. Now that we are in the sweet spot of the summer, the time is right for a weekend getaway or two before the leaves start to turn. There are many different destinations that are ideal for classic car aficionados. There are car museums, car shows, and, of course, there are collector car auctions that take place throughout the year. One of the major automotive auction companies is Mecum, and these people have done a lot for the industry.

Traditionally, classic vehicle auctions have occupied a rather arcane space. A handful of enthusiasts who were “in the know” would participate, but most people were out of the loop. Mecum has changed the playing field in a very profound way. Their auctions are now televised on NBCSN, so you can drink in all of the automotive splendor from the comfort of your easy chair. In fact, since you can enjoy the scenery without necessarily hearing the volume; many taverns and restaurants choose to tune in to the classic car auctions for the benefit of patrons.

It's great to be able to watch an auction on television if you can't attend in person. However, there is nothing like live attendance, especially if you may be interested in making a purchase. A great opportunity will arrive in early September if you can make it to Louisville, Kentucky. When I think about the state, I think about Churchill Downs and horse racing, but the people down there have a great deal of interest in another type of horsepower. There will be a Mecum Auction held at the Louisville Exposition Center from September 8th through the 10th. The list of cars that will be on the block is mind-boggling, but highlights include an ebony 1961 Chevrolet Corvette convertible, a rare 1967 Oldsmobile 442 W-30, a 1970 Dodge Super Bee, and a 1961 Chevy Impala Bubble Top.

The doors open at 8:00 a.m. on each of the three days, and the automotive auction begins at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday September 8th. The vehicle bidding starts at 10:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. On all three days, will feature a road art auction preceding the classic vehicle auctions. This begins at 8:30 a.m. on all three mornings. If you are interested in adding to your collection, this is a late summer opportunity that you don't want to miss.
