Toyota recalls 480,000 Hybrids!

When it comes to building cars, there are literally thousands upon thousands of pieces that go into their creation. Engine, suspension, body, interior, exterior, there are so many areas to keep track of that it is almost mind boggling to the average human being. Beyond that, when producing cars, you then have to perfect the process, and then repeat it thousands, and even millions of times over and over. So it’s no wonder that, occasionally, some of those products come away with a defect or two, and a few cars need to be brought back for some revisions.

Toyota has had a rough decade or so when it comes to recalls. They have had to bring back millions upon millions of cars due to shoddy work and cutting corners, all in the name of profit. But they have paid the price and, hopefully, seem to be on the upswing from that very dark period of their company’s history. However, it seems they are back in the news again. The Japanese car manufacturer has issued a recall that will bring back a few cars. Quite a few, actually, numbering 482,002 in all. If you are an owner of a Toyota Prius, a 2010 through 2012 model, or a Plug-In Prius Hybrid designated either a 2010 or 2012 model, or a Lexus CT200h that was a 2011 or 2012 model, you are involved in this recall. It seems the problem involves the curtain shield air bag inflator, specifically a weld in the inflator may be defective. This weld could crack, and, if it does, may cause parts of the inflator to shoot through the interior of the car if the air bag is deployed. Now, if the air bags do deploy, you probably have enough of a situation with on your hands as it is. But, now, you may have debris flying around at a very high velocity, which could do all kinds of permanent damage and injury to you and/or your passengers.

Toyota has, thankfully, recognized this problem and elected to bring back the cars in question. Beginning late this month, Toyota will notify owners of these cars and have them take their vehicles to the dealership to install retention brackets to fix the faulty weld. This repair will be free of charge, of course. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 with questions or to set up an appointment.
