Hyundai Tucson: Affordable practicality

The process you go through when you buy a new car is tried and true, but, when you think about it, you are taking quite a big risk. You may see a car on the road that catches your eye, and this can draw you in. There is nothing wrong with that, but you're seeing only the outside, and you can become infatuated before you get behind the wheel. (Come to think of it, this is something like the dating process, but that's a subject for a different type of article.) Short of this, you may see a commercial that gets your attention, and, in other instances, you may ride with a friend who has a car that interests you.

Now that we have the internet at our fingertips, we can do research online, but a lot of people act somewhat impulsively when it comes to car buying. You get bored one day, and you head over to the dealership. At that point, you test drive the car, and this is supposed to be the litmus test. In reality, you may have your mind about 90 percent made up before you ever get to the dealership. You may not be all that discerning when you are test driving the car, and, after all, it is a new car. It's probably going to feel pretty good under you. At the same time, you're supposed to make this big decision after driving the car for 10 minutes or so.

A car rental can come in handy before you enter into this type of decision-making process. This can be an intentional act, or it can be accidental. As a case in point, I traveled from my home in Florida to Philadelphia recently, and I rented a compact car online. When I got there, they upgraded me to a small SUV. It was a Hyundai Tucson, a car that I would never have considered buying. That is, until I actually drove one.

I'm not going to say that this is a must-have motor vehicle, but there were a lot of positives that were impressive to me. First of all, I'm a big guy, and I was completely comfortable in the driver's seat. Secondly, it can be kind of disconcerting to drive an unfamiliar car in a big city, but this was not a problem driving the HyundaiTucson. The visibility was great, and, even though the model I rented was the Sport with the standard 2.0- liter engine, the pickup was more than adequate. It may be a small thing, but the leather-wrapped steering wheel was quite pleasing to the touch. The car is a four-door with automatic transmission and front wheel drive. It gets 25 miles per gallon in the city, and 30 on the open road. It has power steering, power windows, heated mirrors, a backup camera, and many other cutting-edge features.

If you are looking for a small, crossover sport utility vehicle, you may want to check out the HyundaiTucson. My opinion is based on a weekend of driving, but it does get 8.5 stars from U.S. News & World Report, and they rate it at number two among cars in its class.
