BMW 3-Series Wagon to be axed in U.S.?

America's renewed obsession with crossovers and SUVs has caused many automakers to rethink their long-term product strategies; it appears that the booming segment could force BMW to throw in the towel and remove its venerable 3-Series station wagon from U.S. shores.

Station wagons, as a whole, have been a threatened species for several decades with the first serious decline in this segment occurring during the original SUV sales boom in the 1990s and early 2000s. However, at a time where many automakers were dropping their station wagon models, BMW stubbornly held on, believing that there was a solid business case for the 3-Series station. Now, a new report suggests that the German car firm could be finally throwing in the towel, and ending U.S. sales of the niche offering.

According to the folks at Bimmerfile, the next generation 3-Series will indeed spawn a wagon variant, but the body style would no longer be offered on U.S. shores. Instead, buyers who would want a compact hauler would have to buy either the oddly styled 3-Series GT, the 4-Series Gran Coupe, or the equally venerable X3 SAV. The X3, in particular, has seen its sales surge as a result of the renewed demand for crossovers in the U.S. and has helped generate a sizable profit for BMW especially when paired with its big brother, the X5. The 3-Series wagon, in contrast, has always appealed to a small and slowly shrinking niche fan base and the resulting sales figures have been miniscule, at best, during its time in production. There is some precedent with this potential axing since Mercedes Benz recently cut the C-Class wagon from its U.S. lineup due to slow sales. However, that model will still be offered in neighboring Canada, and it wouldn't surprise us if BMW followed suit with the 3-Series wagon.

There is still time to pick up a 3-Series wagon for your garage. BMW recently gave the model a mid-cycle refresh late last year, and the same Bimmerfile report claims that the station wagon will remain in production until June of 2019 which should please its dedicated fans for a few more years.
