Mercedes-Benz confirms G550 4x4 Squared for U.S. market

Mercedes-Benz has annoucned plans to bring the G550 4x4to the U.S. market, where it will slot below the more performance-oriented G63 AMG in the G-Wagen model lineup.

This special edition G550 first made its appearance as a Europe-only offering. It shares much of its inspiration with the limited production, and utterly insane, G63 6X6 off-roader. Mercedes engineers wanted to bring even more rugged capability to the G550, so they gave the big brute a beefier suspension which features a 17-inch lift. This helps improve ground clearance, and gives the squared better footing when fording rivers, as well as climbing over rocks and other obstacles.

Unlike other off-roaders, which don't have much lurking beneath their lifted suspensions, the G550 4x42comes equipped with other upgrades to help it cope with extreme terrain. The front suspension features dual springs and dampers that helps keep the front end stable while the track has been widened front and rear by nine and ten inches respectively. Performance for the G550 squared comes from the company's 4.0-liter biturbo V8 which brings 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via the company's 4-MATIC all-wheel drive system, as well as a seven-speed automatic transmission. The torque for each wheel is set at a 50:50 split, but the G550's trademark triple locking differentials help ensure that the big SUV still has plenty of secure handling even when only a single wheel has traction.

Th exterior styling of the G550 largely retains the same function-over-flair styling theme that has defined the G-Wagen lineup for several decades; however, the equally functional interior has thankfully caught up with modern times in ergonomics, luxury, and technology. This newfound focus on luxury is exemplified with the acres of supple leather upholstery, the company's latest suite of technology, as well as an eight-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system.

Pricing is expected to be formally unveiled closer to its 2017 launch date, but interested buyers should be prepared for a healthy premium over the base G550 and its $119,900 MSRP.
