Chrysler recalls 39,000 Fiats

Chrysler's newest toy over the past couple years has been its acquisition of the Fiat brand. They are fun cars that rival the Mini Cooper on every possible plane of competition. But every toy has its occasional problem, and Fiat is no different. It seems that Chrysler is issuing a recall of 39,217 Fiat 500 models designated as 2012-2016 models that were produced between June 21, 2010 through January 12, 2016.

Only models with manual transmissions have been affected, as the clutch diaphragm spring may break. If the spring breaks, then the driver will not be able to change gears. Clearly, if you are driving a car and need to shift, and can't, this could cause serious problems and, in all likelihood, a crash that could injure the driver, passengers, and even pedestrians or other drivers.

Chrysler owners will receive a notice this month informing them of the problem, and then a followup notice once the replacement parts are available. The repair will consist of an installation of a new clutch pedal limiter and a new clutch pedal switch. Owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 with questions. Ready on for the full report...

NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V302000
Component(s): POWER TRAIN
Potential Number of Units Affected: 39,217
Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2012-2016 Fiat 500 vehicles manufactured June 21, 2010, through January 12, 2016, equipped with a manual transmission. The clutch diaphragm spring may fracture and fail, causing an inability to switch gears.

If the clutch diaphragm spring fails, the driver may not be able to shift gears or the vehicle may lose motive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy for this recall will include the installation of a clutch pedal limiter and a clutch pedal switch. Interim notices will be mailed to owners in June 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S34.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
