Audi teases 2017 A5 Coupe

With Audi's A5 coupe quickly reaching the end of its shelf life, the German luxury car maker has previewed the next generation A5 coupe which is expected to make its debut at a private event on June 2nd in Ingolstadt, Germany, where the brand's largest factory is located.

While the extensive camouflage does a good job of hiding the A5's details, it does appear that the exterior styling will take more of an evolutionary approach to its suite of updates versus an outright revolution that would come with an entirely new design language. The front fascia, for example, is consistent with what is already seen on the 2017 Audi A4; however the rear styling is largely unchanged from the current generation model with minor tweaks being done to help it conform with Audi's current design language.

When it eventually makes its debut, the 2017 A5 will be underpinned by Volkswagen's MLB Evo platform. As such, engines will be largely carried over from the A4 sedan with the base model featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI four-cylinder engine that is good for 252 horsepower. However, for those who seek more horsepower and sharpened handling traits, they will need to step up to the S5 trim which brings a suite of performance upgrades to the car as well as a 353 horsepower turbocharged V6. Like the current generation A5/S5 lineup, this updated version will probably not feature a manual transmission, and instead continue to make sole use of the current car's DSG automatic. These revisions would allow the A5 to counter rivals such as the BMW 4 Series, Mercedes C-Class Coupe, as well as the Cadillac ATS coupe.

Soon after the car makes its official debut at the aforementioned event in Germany, it will go on sale—with U.S. buyers able to buy the car by the end of the year as a 2017 model. After the standard coupe has a chance to launch and get itself accepted in the marketplace, it will eventually be joined by a convertible model, as well as a four-door fastback variant dubbed the A5 Sportback. The latter model has not been offered in the U.S. but Audi did state that this latest Sportback was crafted with the U.S. market in mind, and it would be the first time that a Sportback variant has ever been offered to U.S. buyers.
