Volvo previews mystery concept

Volvo has released a mysterious teaser image that appears to show an all-new concept vehicle that could make its debut at a private event in Gothenburg, Sweden (the site of Volvo's HQ), next week.

First making its appearance on the company's Snapchat account, the picture shows a concept that appears to fall in line with Volvo's current design language, thanks to notable cues such as the elongated headlights, reworked front grille, as well as the gimmicky T-shaped LED daytime running lights, (dubbed Thor's Hammer in VolvoSpeak). The picture also allows a compelling glimpse of the hood design which appears to hint at a more muscular theme for the overall styling. However, final judgment will have to wait until more pictures are released by the company.

The concept probably will incorporate the all-new platform called Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that is believed will eventually make its way into several Volvo models. This platform would also compliment a recent Volvo announcement that the firm's new 40 series models would be offered in either three- or four-cylinder layouts. The 40 series is also expected to embrace plug-in technology, though that model probably won't make its appearance until later in production to allow the standard 40 series models time to be accepted in the marketplace.

In an intriguing twist, the folks at Carscoops suggest that Volvo is preparing to debut not one but two concepts. The first would be the aforementioned V40 which is expected to take on the BMW 1 Series and the Mercedes CLA; the second would be a next-generation CUV that would take on the BMW X1 as well as the Mercedes GLA. It is unknown which of the concepts is featured in the teaser image, but the company did say that the V40 was designed with the United States market in mind, and, as a result, it would be the first time that Volvo has returned to the compact car segment in several years.

Volvo has not released any further details about the mystery concept, but look for more information to be released over the next few days.
