Revised BMW i8 to receive new styling and power updates?

The i8 was a very compelling showcase for BMW when its made its debut back in 2014. Boasting futuristic styling cues and fuel-friendly power, the i8 proved to be a perfect showcase for the company's i brand, and it appears that it's about to receive its first major suite of updates, according to reports from several British media outlets.

The most notable of these updates will take place beneath the i8's sleek skin, bringing more power to the equation, thanks to a more powerful electric motor as well as a revised version of its current 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. The new combo is expected to make 420 horsepower—which is roughly 80 more horses than the current model—and should allow the car to make the sprint to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. BMW will probably retain the almost de rigueur 155 mph top speed for the car.

However, don't expect the i8 to forget all about its role as a fuel efficient vehicle with BMW engineers equipping the updated version with a bigger battery pack for even more driving range. It is currently unknown just how big of a battery pack it will have, but initial estimates suggest that it will go up from the current model's 7.1 kWh battery pack to a beefier 10 kWh battery pack. An inductive charging system would allow buyers to go cordless when it comes time to recharge the car, though that feature possibly will be priced accordingly in the options list.

The interior will most likely retain its basic layout and design, but look for the updated model to possibly incorporate the novel Gesture Control system that made its debut in the current generation 7 Series. This would make the i8 a true flagship for the i brand and help appeal to tech-oriented buyers. The exterior styling is also expected to receive a mild update with carbon fiber wheels possibly being offered as optional equipment.

According to the folks at British magazine Autocar, the updated BMW i8 will arrive in showrooms late next year which could mean that the car will make its appearance at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. When it does it will share the spotlight with the upcoming i8 Spyder. The Spyder will bring droptop motoring to the i8's impressive list of assets, and it will also fill a void in the i8's lineup while answering the demands of BMW enthusiasts who have been clamoring for a production i8 Spyder for the past few years.
