Hyundai Recalls 173,000 Cars

With great success, comes great responsibility. Hyundai has made some great strides over the past couple decades, and climbed their way up from bargain basement car company to a very respectable car manufacturer that produces cars people can be proud to own. But, as with any company that produces a thing, the more of it you produce, the higher the likelihood of something going wrong with one, or two, or 173,000 of them.

It seems that a group of Sonata models, specifically 2011 models made from December 11, 2009 through October 31, 2010, may have an problem with their power steering. The electric circuit board that assists the steering may have been damaged from the factory. The damaged EPS board can result in a sudden loss of power steering altogether. The unexpected loss of power steering can cause the driver to react poorly and potentially crash.

Beginning in May, Hyundai will offer a free fix of the EPS unit for all affected owners. Questions may be directed to Hyundai at 1-855-371-9640. Read on for the full report ...

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to October 31, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) circuit board may be damaged and result in a loss of power steering assist.

With a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EPS control unit, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 30, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9640. Hyundai's number for this recall is 143.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
