Spyker Sold At Saab Dealers & Saab Icon May Return

The upstart car manufacturer Spyker Cars N.V. intends to sell the high end sports cars in Saab showrooms near you. According to Spykers CEO Victor Muller, they plan to offer the C8 Aileron model through 90 Saab outlets by the end of next year, almost doubling the number of dealers selling the hand-made sports cars this year.

Ever since Spyker bought Saab from GM in February, the Dutch supercar maker has been benefiting from lower prices. Generic parts such as windshield wiper motors will be cheaper via Spyker's sister company Saab, because Saab buys in volume. Spyker will also benefit from the Saab engineering resources to help the production of the supercar and, in turn, make the niche supercar profitable.

I am excited about this. No, not because I am going to go and buy a Spyker anytime soon; my income prohibits that from happening. I am excited that I will be able to go to a local Saab dealer and get to actually sit in a Spyker and really check it out. I have seen them only at shows and you can’t really get all that up close and personal. With the AutoShopper.com network of dealers, I am sure one will let me take it for the weekend… maybe.

I am really excited about the recent news that Saab is looking into the revival of the iconic tear drop-shaped 92 from 60 years ago, a model that is near and dear to my heart from when I was a kid. Back then they were 3-cyl, 2-stroke, and front wheel drive. I am sure they will give this little baby a little more HP than back then, maybe a turbo? I know I am getting ahead of myself but I am getting excited. If they decide to move forward with the new model, and I hope they do, it would be the first car fully designed under the Spyker stewardship.

While all reports indicate that Saab dealers are raring to get the Spyker franchise and start selling the $200,000+ vehicle lineup, there is quite a price difference from Saab's flagship 9-5 sedan that tops out at $50,000. Since Spyker sold only 59 vehicles last year, only time will tell if they have more stores than sales at the end of 2010. Spyker remains one of the smaller niche brands in the world, but that could change in the coming years.

I am really glad that GM sold off Saab and did not let it fade away like their other brands. Check out the old Saab 92 2-stroker in the video below; it may live again...

While I personally missed the Tampa International Auto Show last October, my fellow AutoShopper.com bloggers were there and took some tasty pics of the Spyker. (See Below)
