Hyundai Recalls 18,000 Genesis & Equus Cars

Japanese car manufacturer Hyundai has come a long way in their quest towards higher quality cars. They've established a very stable and reliable reputation in recent years and should be lauded for their accomplishment. No one is perfect, however, no matter how hard we try, and Hyundai is no exception. They have recently had to issue a recall of 18,700 vehicles. There are two models in question in this recall:  Any 2012 model year Genesis that was built between August 1, 2011 through April 30, 2012, and the Equus model years 2011-2013 that were produced between July 10, 2011 through June 12, 2012.

It seems that the windshield wiper motor cover has a propensity to deteriorate and allow the circuit board of the motor to be affected by corrosion, which could cause the windshield wipers to stop working altogether. While not a catastrophic defect, it can certainly have catastrophic effects in the wrong set of circumstances and cause some serious problems for drivers of these cars as well as others on the road.

Hyundai has said it will begin notifying owners immediately and will start this recall at the end of April. The recall will allow owners to take their cars in to have their wiper motor cover replaced with what would expectedly be a better piece. There will be no charge for the service. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 with questions. Read on for the full report ...

NHTSA Campaign Number:16V117000

Component(s): VISIBILITY

Potential Number of Units Affected:18,700

Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2012 Genesis vehicles manufactured August 1, 2011, to April 30, 2012, and 2011-2013 Equus vehicles manufactured July 10, 2011, to June 12, 2012. The windshield wiper motor cover seal on the affected vehicles may degrade allowing corrosion on the wiper motor's circuit board. The corrosion can cause intermittent or total loss of wiper function.

Inoperative wipers during inclement weather can decrease driver visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper motor cover and seal, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 22, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 140.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
