Hyundai Santa Cruz Pickup Truck To Spawn Kia Variant?

Hot on the heels of the recent unveiling of the Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup truck concept, a new report appears to suggest that Kia is not far behind in its desire for a work-oriented hauler, and could potentially have an entry of its own before the end of the decade.

Kia's sister company Hyundai has already confirmed that the Santa Cruz has been given the green light for production, However, according to a source within the company that spoke to the Australian publicationMotoring, the production Santa Cruz would also almost certainly spawn a Kia variant that would allow Hyundai/Kia to reach out to multiple price segments within the segment potentially creating a very desirable model family for buyers to choose from. "You can guarantee that if Hyundai builds the Santa Cruz, we will have our own version. We have observed how popular the utility is for many different buyers, and a Kia model would also be very popular, I think" stated the source.

Giving Kia the green light for its own version of the truck would allow Hyundai to potentially reap the rewards from the enhanced economy's of scale that the two would provide. The two pickup trucks would share the same platform and basic mechanical hardware, but diverge when it comes to exterior and interior design with each truck showcasing a different design language. This would not only help Hyundai avoid the common stigma associated with poorly done rebadge models, but also allow each brand to distinctively stand out from one another which will help play huge dividends when viewed against rivals from GM, Ford, Ram, and even indirect competition from Toyota and Nissan.

Hyundai's first ever pickup truck is expected to make its formal debut either later this year or early next year. It is currently unknown when the Kia version will make its debut but look for the date to possibly hinge on how well the Hyundai variant does on the marketplace. This will be no easy feat considering the strong market share that is currently wielded by GM, Ram, and Ford which has blunted prior attempts at shaking up the established order by other Asian pickup truck entries such as the Nissan Titan and the Toyota Tundra. In addition, it will be interesting to see how Hyundai executives will differentiate two trucks that will be fighting in roughly the same established niche.
