Jeep Planning New Wagoneer SUV? New Report Suggests One Is Indeed In The Works

It's no secret that Jeep has been on a recent product blitz. So far it has helped produce strong sales, but a new report suggests that the product onslaught could include a revived Wagoneer SUV that aims to tackle the full size SUV segment.

This latest report follows up on months of rumors that were eventually confirmed in March when Jeep revealed that it was working on an all-new Grand Wagoneer model. The Grand Wagoneer would give the brand a formidable entry that would challenge the Range Rover luxury SUV. In contrast, the Wagoneer would most likely serve as a more mass market alternative against rivals such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and the Toyota Sequoia.

FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne highlighted the importance of both models in a brief statement to Automotive News," I think it's important for us to have found a home for the Grand Wagoneer family—both the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer—in whatever shape they come, and that we find that space without creating additional production capacity." While information on both models has been spotty, it is known that the Grand Wagoneer will share the same unibody platform that will make its appearance on the next generation Grand Cherokee. The Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer never existed concurrently during their respective production runs, so, as a result, it is very difficult to make a solid finding on which direction the Wagoneer will head.

My earlier theory on the Wagoneer possibly being based on a full size SUV platform does have legs since it would not only help differentiate the two vehicles, it would provide FCA with enhanced economyies of scale. In addition to these new Jeeps, Marchionne also said that the Ram brand is very interested in adding an SUV entry of their own to the mix which would help diversify its pickup truck centric model lineup. It would be based on the next generation Ram truck platform, which could help give the Wagoneer a solid platform to work with.

This could also allow the two to have distinct wheelbases with the smaller Ram model competing with the Chevrolet Tahoe, and the Jeep Wagoneer featuring a longer wheelbase to take on bigger entries such as the Suburban. The Grand Wagoneer is not expected to make its debut until at least 2019.
