Jeep Recalls 32,000 Cherokees

Chrysler has issued a recall of its brand new Jeep Cherokee from the past two models years. While this is unfortunate it isn't completely unexpected as most new versions (especially one such as the Cherokee that remained the same for decades) typically have a lot of kinks and bugs to be worked out before they are perfected.

2015–2016 Cherokee models built between February 18, 2015 and September 10, 2015 that were equipped with a power lift gate are the targets of this recall numbering 32,784 in total. It seems that, due to a slight design flaw, water has a fairly good chance of leaking onto the lift gate control module, and, as you can imagine, that isn't good. A short circuit of the module is very likely, and that short could very easily be the cause of a vehicular fire. Not fun.

Chrysler has said it will notify owners, and then inspect the parts in question, and then replace any damaged parts, including a new module that will be equipped with a water shield. There will be no charge for any part of the process or the parts. Owners can reach Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 with questions or to set up an appointment. Read on for the full report...

NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V826000
Potential Number of Units Affected: 32,784

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 18, 2015, to September 10, 2015 and equipped with the power liftgate option. In the affected vehicles, water may leak into the Power Liftgate Control Module and result in a high resistance short circuit.

A short circuit in the module increases the risk of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the module and connectors for corrosion, replacing the damaged components as necessary. The mastic shield will be removed and the module will be covered with a water shield. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R67.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
