Lexus CT 200h To Be Redesigned For 2017

With all the news surrounding the rest of Lexus' model lineup, the CT 200h has largely been the lonely model stuck in a holding pattern, watching as its brand mates get updated all around it. However, if a new report is true, the little hatchback will finally get its chance to be in the spotlight and get updated just in time for the 2017 model year.

Currently very little is known about what the next generation CT 200h will bring to the table, but the folks at Autovisie quoted an unnamed insider within Lexus, who confirmed that the next generation CT will ride on the all-new Toyota New Global Architecture which first made its debut on the 2016 Toyota Prius. It is currently unknown if Lexus will stick to its hybrid-only strategy for the CT 200h (it would make a compelling rival to the Golf with a conventional gasoline engine), but the current model is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine which is hooked up to a 650 volt electric motor. While the combination will not win any stoplight dashes, the current generation CT 200h makes up for it by being reasonably efficient with the car achieving a combined 42 mpg.

If Lexus chooses to continue its current startegy, look for the next generation CT 200h to be heavily influenced by the next generation Prius. This means that the model would be powered by that car's 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine as well as the 71-horsepower electric motor. The battery setup would also be borrowed from the Prius, and allow the CT to be equipped with either a hydride or lithium-ion battery. This special powertrain allows the 2016 Prius to be ten percent more fuel efficient than the old model, so naturally we suspect that this will also be the case for the next generation CT 200h. Look for the exterior styling to also build upon the "Spindle Grille" theme that many recent Lexus models have embraced, with bolder lines and curves to allow the car to amp up its performance side.

The interior will also be in for a major upgrade with much of the bland styling and design being replaced by higher quality materials, and a driver-centric layout that could boast improved ergonomics, better seats, and more technology to make the model stand out better in the crowded green car marketplace.
