Lamborghini To Celebrate Founder's Birthday With Limited Production Supercar

Lamborghini has big plans for the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March, when, if a recent batch of new reports are to be believed, the Italian sportscar company will unveil an all-new limited-production supercar to help celebrate the birthday of company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini.

Contrary to what many analysts have predicted, this new offering will not be a one-off concept like recent unveilings such as the one-seat Egoista or the Aventador J, but will have an extremely limited production run with only 20 units being built. In that regard, it will follow in the footprints of some of the company's other low-production offering such as the Sesto Elemento and the Veneno. The model is expected to be dubbed the Centanario, and will be formally presented on the 100th anniversary of Ferruccio Lamborghini's birth. Lamborghini was born on April 28th, 1916.

Lamborghini originally began by building tractors and other farm equipment, but his disdain for Enzo Ferrari and his brand of sports cars prompted Ferruccio to build offerings of his own which focused on his own unique style and interpretation of speed, and soon entered the supercar ranks. He died in 1993 at the age of 76, and left not only a strong legacy, he gave us a company that has seen its fair share of ups and downs during the ensuing decades.

According to the folks at Auto Express, which recently talked with Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann about the project, the Centanario will feature decidedly more subtle bodywork than prior creations, like the Veneno, which embodied a healthy dose of extreme styling cues and artistic curves in its design. This could mean that it will share much of its influence with the recently unveiled Asterion sedan concept which made its debut last year at the Paris Motor Show. Like the Asterion, the new model could also feature some form of hybrid powertrain, but, in a bid to reduce time and development costs, will most likely adopt a variant of the 6.5-liter V12 that also sees duty in the Aventador flagship.

Look for more information, including teaser images, to gradually make their way into the limelight in the near future, with the name possibly being confirmed early next year before its big debut under the lights at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.
