Great Cars That Nobody Bought: 2008-2013 Volvo C30

On American roads, the 2008–2013 Volvo C30 is a bit of a unicorn. It's a sexy three-door hatchback that offers loads of style and a surprising amount of performance. Problem was, it was built by your mother's favorite car company, and nobody outside of her garden club even knew that it existed. Which is too bad, because this Volvo P1800 successor had a lot to offer...

The first thing that you notice about the 2008–2013 Volvo C30 is the look. It's small, but the proportions are correct, which makes it look like a fun little roller skate. The back hatch is all-glass, which not only aids rearward visibility, it also pays homage to the sexy P1800 from long ago. There were also a selection of smart two-tone color schemes, and the uplevel Volvo C30 R-Design came with a (truely) sporty body kit that made it look like the coolest car ever to grace an IKEA parking lot.

On the inside, you got a pair of wonderful front bucket seats that were available with such stylish features as French stitching, twin-color upholstery, and memory for the seating position. The back two seats are adequate for vertically-challenged people, but they really work best when folded down to expand the cargo area. And there wasn't really much isn't much in the way of cabin tech. But the simplicity is almost refreshing.

The front wheels of the 2008–2013 Volvo C30 were driven by either a 227hp turbo 5-cylinder, or an upgraded 250hp turbo-5 (Volvo C30 Polestar). The standard T5 engine serves up an entertaining amount of power through the 6-speed manual/5-speed automatic. But the added ponies in the C30 Polestar do seem to overwhelm the lil' Swede's FWD chassis. No matter though, because if you buy a Volvo, your mother probably won't commit you to rehab...
