Beater That's Hard To Beat: 2003-2008 Mazda6

For some people, a sportscar is just too small, and a Camry is just too boring. A BMW M5 would be the natural family car choice. But if you're reading this article, then you already know that you can't afford one. Driving pleasure is still within your reach, however, because, once upon a time, Mazda decided to become the 'BMW of Japan'. In 2003, they created the midsize Mazda 6, and, like most Bimmers, it drives just as it looks...

The 2003–2008 Mazda6 is a midsize family sedan that was designed for people who don't view driving as a chore. To accomplish this, they gave it a double-wishbone front suspension, a multi-link rear suspension, and a rack-and-pinion steering system that's as precise as a surgeons' scalpel. Throw this family car into a turn, and it responds without a fuss. The body roll is well controlled, the steering is laser-sharp, and, thanks to a 'zero loss' brake booster, the clampers can scrub off speed without a hint of fade. But the best part is, all of this is done without spoiling the ride. The 'real' BMW should take note of this...

Under the bow, lives either a 160hp 4-pot, or an exhilarating 3.0L V6. The latter is an all-aluminum DOHC gem, that uses variable valve timing to create a silky-smooth 220hp. That gusto is sent to the front wheels through either a 5-speed manual, or a 5-speed auto with Sport Mode and manual shifting capabilities. Performance with the V6 is hilariously good, and the top-spec 2003–2008 Mazda6 S gets a stickier suspension, along with a tastefully aggressive body kit. Purple and F-U yellow were available, but Gold Pearl is color you want. And the optional rear wing is a must-have.

Besides all of the 'Zoom Zoom', the 2003–2008 Mazda6 comes with lots of interior room, lots of available toys, and surprisingly comfortable seats. There were three body styles too: a four-door sedan, a five-door hatchback that looked like the four-door, and a five-door Sport Wagon. But whatever model you choose, make sure it has that brilliant V6. Because with a sticker price of $4,000–$8,000, the 2003-2008 Mazda6 is one beater that's hard to beat...
