BMW to Sell 300 Copies of the 2016 BMW M4 GTS in the US

Regardless of how much synthetic nonsense they've crammed into the BMW M4 (electric steering, audio system exhaust note, etc.), it's still an impressive performance computer. And now they've taken the science of speed even further with this limited edition 2016 BMW M4 GTS...

The 2016 BMW M4 GTS has everything that you need in a track-day car. There's an adjustable strut-mounted CFRP wing, an adjustable carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser, and there's a built-in roll bar and fire extinguisher where the backseat once was. Underneath, this street-legal racer gets big carbon-ceramic brakes (with gold-painted 6/4 piston calipers), an adjustable coilover suspension, the Active M differential connected to a lightweight CFRP driveshaft, and you get a modified steering system connected to super-wide 19x9.5 wheels (20x10.5 rear), wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

To make things more exciting on the track, the M Sport engineers fitted a water injection system in the intake of the 3.0L straight-6 (this is the first use of this technology in a production car). Since water can absorb heat, then evaporate, a fine mist of water is used to cool the air before it reaches the cylinders (the system is fed by a 1.3-gallon water tank, located in the trunk). When combined with an uprated oiling system, improved ignition timing, and a pair of twin-scoll turbos, the 2016 BMW M4 GTS is able to produce 493hp and 442 lb-ft of torque, which is 68-hp/36 lb-ft more than stock.

Track cars are all about translating power into killer lap times, and one of the best ways to do this is to shed unnecessary weight. So the 2016 BMW M4 GTS has lost some 200 lbs over a stock BMW M4. Lightweight materials like aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) are used throughout the car (hood, trunklid, roof, etc.), and the interior gets lighter door panels, a lightweight center console, racing seats, and bespoke trim. BMW claims that their new track monster can lap the Nurburgring in just 7 minutes, 28 seconds. But you can bet that test driver has a lot more skill than... you.

Just 700 copies of the 2016 BMW M4 GTS will be made, and 300 of those have been allocated to the U.S. market. Prices haven't been announced yet, but we do know that it will be available only in Sapphire Black, Mineral Gray, Alpine White, or Frozen Dark Gray. Gold wheels and obnoxious 'Organic LED' tail lights aside, this may be the best-looking (and performing) BMW M4 yet.
