JLR Unveils $15,000 Land Rover Defender... Pedal Car

Land Rover owners are a fiercely loyal lot. They'll spend money like a government bureaucrat, just because they like the idea having a vehicle that can literally "go anywhere". It doesn't matter how notoriously unreliable they are, how much oil they leak, or how much they cost to fix. And now, Land Rover's giving these well-heeled fashionistas something else to spend money on. Say hello then, to the $15,000 Land Rover pedal car...

The Land Rover Defender is the most modern incarnation of the original Land Rover that was introduced in 1948. This rugged off-roader is a popular method of transport from Africa to Australia. It shuns the image-driven luxuries found in other Land Rover products for a more purpose-built approach. Which is probably why most of the world's militaries have at least one fleet of Defenders (even the Queen of England has one). But even with its storied reputation, Land Rover has still decided to cease production in 2016 (a completely new version is currently in development). And to celebrate one of their most iconic models, Land Rover is offering a pint-sized version, with a gallon-sized price tag.

Set to go on sale in the first quarter of 2016, the bespoke Land Rover Defender Pedal Car features styling cues from the yet-to-be-released Defender. This hand-made novelty uses a rolled-edge aluminum frame, complete with a functional spring suspension, brakes, and a parking brake. The drive mechanism will allow Master Rich to pedal forwards or backwards, and the off-road tread on the rubber tires will keep him from getting stuck on the lawn. Among the many small details are a set of ruggedized side steps, a tough aluminum body, a unique chassis number, and fine leather is used to cover the seat, steering wheel, and cargo bed.

Our more eagle-eyed readers might notice the unique front grille, hood, and quad-LED headlamps, which we assume to be from the forthcoming 2017 Land Rover Defender. But until that arrives, you can dip into Jr's trust fund and get him this £10,000 (approx $15k at current exchange rates) Land Rover Defender pedal car. It won't be big enough for you, but your brat will be the coolest kid at Prep-K.
