Checker Cars Will Rise From the Ashes

Throughout the history of the automotive industry, there have been many casualties that have fallen by the wayside. We are talking about companies that were once very successful. However, time takes its toll, and market conditions change.

When it comes to American automakers, the foreign invasion played a huge role in the demise of some companies and automotive divisions. Plus, the gas crisis of the 1970s also changed the landscape in many ways before the imports started to eat into domestic profits.

The majority of the iconic vehicles that stick in your mind are not commercial in nature. However, there are a few exceptions, and the Checker taxicab is one of them.

If you are running a taxicab company, you want people to immediately recognize the fact that you are open for business as it were. We have the bright yellow cabs that you cannot miss, and Checker Taxi took a similar approach. Because of their checkered appearance, the company's cabs were hard to miss.

Checker Motors Corporation was the company that wound up providing the vehicles that were used by Checker Taxi. At first, they were two entirely different companies, but the founder of the Checker Motors Corporation, Morris Markin, ultimately acquired the cab company as well.

Markin founded Checker Motors Corporation back in 1922, and they were not always exclusively in the taxicab business. In the late 1950s, they started to sell passenger cars to everyday consumers, and they also supplied other automakers with various different components.

The founder of the company passed away in 1970, but it remained in business for decades after his death. They declared bankruptcy in 2009, and they went out of business the following year.

It would seem as though that is the end of the story, but if you are a Checker enthusiast, we have some good news to report. Checker Motor Cars, a company that is centered in Haverhill, Massachusetts, is planning to bring back the memorable vehicle, but they won't be offering taxicabs. They will be coming out with a six-door sedan and two-door sport pickup that kind of resembles an old school Ford Ranchero.

If you ask me, this is a very cool idea, and I will personally give the sport pickup a long look. In addition to these two new models that they are producing, the company also does restorations of classic Checkers. To learn more, check visit their website.
