Mother Gives Birth While Driving

Everyone has heard stories of women delivering babies in the car on the way to the hospital—old news, right? Well, here’s a new local news story that beats them all! A Minnesota woman delivered a baby last week on the way to the hospital—while driving her Chevy Cobalt! She was racing to the hospital with baby’s father—who apparently was unable to drive due to a medical disorder—and according to a statement by the father in the local newspaper "she yelled 'quick, grab the wheel'.”

The baby’s father, Joseph Phillips, reportedly took the steering wheel while Amanda McBride, the mom to be, delivered the newborn—at the same time as she controlled the accelerator and brake in an attempt to speed to the hospital.

The couple considered pulling over to the side of the road to call an ambulance after the baby was delivered, but decided to turn up the heater in the car and drive the rest of the way into the local medical center themselves. According to the 29-year-old new mother, “the baby just came right out. I was just sitting on the seat and he just slid out. It really wasn’t bad at all."

The medical center was notified in advance, and when the car pulled up, hospital workers were actually amazed that the new mom was in the driver's seat.

The baby was 8lbs and 18.5 inches long, reportedly in perfect health; he was named Joseph Phillips, after his father.

Because the couple was in a red 2005 Cobalt, Chevrolet decided to help the family by providing a year's supply of diapers, two car seats, a stroller, bottles, formula, toys, and other baby supplies.

Spokesperson for Chevrolet, Margaret Brooks was reported as saying; "We knew the Cobalt was designed to deliver its occupants safely, but never did we expect a delivery quite like this,”. "From everyone at Chevrolet, we'd like to congratulate Amanda and Joseph on the newest addition to their family. Unfortunately, there is no section in the Cobalt driver's manual on 'How to Change a Diaper,' but we're sure they'll do just fine."

Chevrolet couldn’t be happier with the free advertising, what better way to sell an economical small family car? I wonder if I could get a free fence and a years’ supply of dog food if my dog has puppies in my Ford truck?
