After the Smoke Clears at Belmont, Visit the Saratoga Automobile Museum

I'm a big horse racing fan, and it is in my blood, because I used to go to the track with my family when I was a child. During the Triple Crown series, I have written about automotive museums that you can visit if you were to go to Kentucky or Maryland to see the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness.

Horse racing and the history of the automotive industry go hand-in-hand, because the early automotive bodies were made in large part by horse-drawn carriage makers. If you can attend a classic race one day while you check out a fantastic classic car museum the next, you can enjoy a full weekend.

I need to keep going with this theme as the Belmont Stakes approaches on Saturday. It is going to be a huge day, with American Pharoah (it's wrong, but it's right... that's how his name is spelled) looking to make history. The Triple Crown dream is still intact after the first two legs, and if American Pharoah can pull it off, he will be the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed pulled off the feat in 1978.

The problem I've run into is that there aren't any really killer classic car museums right around Belmont Park, which is in Elmont, New York. If you go to the big race, you will have the time of your life, and you may want to forget about cars for the weekend and take a bite of the Big Apple.

However, there is a great New York road trip that you can take in the near future if you want to visit one of the best classic car museums in the country and experience some of the finest horse racing anywhere.

Saratoga is in upstate New York, and it is a spectacular destination any way you slice it. However, the Saratoga horse race meeting begins on July 24th, and it will conclude on September 7th, so you have a nice window there if you want to visit Saratoga at the ideal time of year.

While you are in Saratoga, you can also head over to the Saratoga Automobile Museum. They have some awesome exhibits, including one that is called East of Detroit, which is dedicated to New York's influence on automotive manufacturing. There is a New York Racing exhibit, and the museum also houses the New York Stock Car Hall of Fame.

If you are within striking distance and you are looking for a good road trip this summer, by all means, head up the New York State Thruway and treat yourself to some automotive and equine excellence.
