Jaguar Allegedly On Track With Development of J-Pace CUV; Could Arrive by Decade's End

With the oddly named F-Pace set to arrive in Jaguar showrooms soon, a new report has emerged that suggests that the British luxury carmaker is on track with development of the bigger, and still oddly named, J-Pace CUV, which would share some of its components with the Ranger Rover, and possibly be unveiled an auto show before the end of the decade.

According to a new report that appears to corroborate with earlier claims, the folks at CAR suggest that development for the J-Pace is proceeding as scheduled and that it could make an appearance sometime in the near future, possibly before 2019. Reflecting its role as a bigger Jaguar CUV offering, the J-Pace is expected to offer seating for seven and emerge as a rival to the Mercedes GLS Class, as well as the BMW X7 which is also rumored to be under development. To help it achieve this goal, the J-Pace would be underpinned on the same long wheelbase aluminum-intensive platform that currently sees duty in the Land Rover Range Rover SUV. However, like the smaller F-Pace, we expect the J-Pace to focus more on on-road performance versus off-road excursions, and make do without some of the Range Rover's off-road hardware and technology.

While this may be disappointing to the discerning few that were viewing the J-Pace as a stylish alternative to the forementioned Range Rover, the report suggests that a plug-in hybrid version will eventually appear, as well as an SVR-badged variant that would do battle with similarly performance-honed rivals. For its part, Jaguar has passionately denied the rumors claiming that any reports regarding the J-Pace, as well as any other CUV offerings beyond the F-Pace, are purely speculation and that no official plans have been made at this point for any other SUV/CUV entry. Jaguar executives have even claimed that any crossover entries must be "sporty enough for the brand" and that a seven-seater that would fit the J-Pace's description has been rejected because of these requirements, according to a separate report that was published by Motoring.

While we will have to wait until more information rises, we believe that the J-Pace is indeed in the cards and that it would allow Jaguar to cater to customers that want a SUV or CUV, but may find the F-Pace a bit too small for their needs and tastes. It would also help Jaguar boost its overall sales and allow the brand to enter a segment that has seen a resurgence in growth and sales, thanks to low fuel prices and the recent explosion in the popularity of CUVs over the past several years.
