Toyota Recalls 159,000 RAV4 Models

Well, it seems that the words, "Toyota" and "recall" are slowly becoming synonymous. Unfortunately for the Japanese car maker, they have had to recently send out a call-back for 159,700 RAV4 models built between May 13, 2003 and October 25, 2005. This time around it is because these cars have an airbag that may go off without notice and without a crash. It seems that moisture can get in and mess with the inflator, causing it to rupture, and thus deploy the the dual-stage front airbag unexpectedly.

Obviously, this could not only cause serious injury to an unsuspecting driver or passenger, it could also cause a catastrophic accident if it happens to the driver at the wrong time.Toyota has once again offered to fix the faulty equipment for free and will begin notifying owners this July.Owners can contact Toyota directly at 1-800-331-4331 with questions and concerns. Read on for the full report ...

Report Receipt Date: MAY 13, 2015
NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V284000
Component(s): AIR BAGS
Potential Number of Units Affected: 159,700

Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

SUMMARY:
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2004-2005 Toyota RAV4 vehicles manufactured May 13, 2003, to October 25, 2005. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which could cause the inflator to rupture or the air bag to deploy abnormally.

CONSEQUENCE:
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the driver or other occupants. Additionally, the air bag may deploy abnormally, increasing the risk of injury to the driver.

REMEDY:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag, free of charge. Owners will be notified by mid-July 2015. An interim notice will be mailed if parts are not available at that time. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
