BMW Releases Teaser Of Upcoming Concept Car

With the 2015 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este set to take place in Italy later this month, BW has released a lone teaser image of the slick concept car it plans to unveil at the show—a 21st century tribute to the legendary 3.0 CSL Coupe.

As it name implies, the concept is a modern interpretation of the 3.0 CSL Coupe which was known for its fearsome ability to tear up racing circuits across Europe during the 1970s. Not only did this talent cement the car’s place in racing history, it also served as the figurative genesis for the CSL moniker which would later appear on several other models, including the E46-era M3. In the case of the concept, the lone image confirms that it will be a retro-themed affair, and feature a slick yellow paint job with contrasting black elements and flared fenders, as well as a big rear-mounted wing.

While interior photos were not released, BMW claims that the interior was designed to make use of every single element of the cabin with each piece serving a distinct role in appearance and function. The company also claims that anything "superfluous" was left out of the concept, which appears to suggest that modern but bulky features such as a touchscreen infotainment system, plush carpets, and a formal air conditioning system will not be part of this race-oriented package. BMW also chose to keep the concept’s performance hardware under wraps, but it’s a strong possibility that a tweaked version of the company’s familiar twin turbocharged inline six is part of the package. An equal amount of carbon fiber will also be on hand to help reduce weight, and allow the concept to retain its lean mean track-slaying proportions.

As is the case with many of the concepts that BMW has introduced at this prestigious Concours over the years, the 3.0 CSL Hommage concept will be nothing more than a one-off design study that will most likely not get the official green light for production in its current form. Instead, look for some of the styling elements from this concept to make their way (albeit in a tamer guise) onto the next generation 6-Series coupe. There is some precedent with this move since the 6-Series is a direct descendant of the 3.0 CSL, and it would be a neat retro-inspired way that the model can get back in touch with its race-inspired roots while also offering world-class luxury at the same time.

Look for the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage to make its formal debut on May 22nd, but BMW has revealed that not only will it debut the concept via an online reveal a few days prior to the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, it will also be joined at the prestigious event by a second mystery concept vehicle, so stay tuned to Autoshopper for the latest developments on both of these concept vehicles as they become available.
