Gm Recalls 19,000 SUVs

GM has recently issued a recall that isn't actually a recall... sort of. The General is bringing back Chevy Trax made between October 13, 2014 through February 3, 2015 (all 2015 designated models) and Buick Encore models made between August 26, 2014 through February 9, 2015 (also all 2015 designated models) totaling a whopping 19,831 models in all. So what's the big issue? Well, nothing. The cars themselves are okay (so far) mechanically speaking. No big engine failures or potential electrical fire hazards. Actually, the issue is that GM didn't put the rim-size information for these trucks on the placards on the cars. No big deal, right?  Well, no, and yes. Technically, this violates the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards requirement that states load capacities must be available. The issue isn't for the rims that come with the car from GM, but rather, if the owner were to change the rims on their truck, they may not know what size or load capacity to look for, and may mistakenly get a rim that cannot handle the amount of load necessary, which may result in some serious driving issues.

To avoid all this, GM is going to contact owners of these vehicles and ask them to come back for a free fix of the unlabeled placard and replace it with one that has the correct information on it. GM has not stated when they will begin their recall but owners may contact Buick at 1-800-521-7300 and Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 for more information. Read on for the full report...

NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V162000
Component(s): EQUIPMENT
Potential Number of Units Affected: 19,831

Manufacturer: General Motors LLC

SUMMARY:
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015 Buick Encore vehicles manufactured August 26, 2014, to February 9, 2015, and 2015 Chevrolet Trax vehicles manufactured October 13, 2014, to February 3, 2015. The affected vehicles have tire placards that do not provide the rim size information for the front or rear wheels. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims and Motor Home/Recreation Vehicle Trailer Load Carrying Capacity Information for Motor Vehicles with a GVWR of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or less."

CONSEQUENCE:
If the label is missing front and rear rim size information, the owner may replace the rims with ones that are an incorrect size, increasing the risk of crash.

REMEDY:
GM will notify owners, and will send owners a corrected label, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, and Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 15166.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
