Lamborghini Refutes Rumors Of Cheaper Model; Promises To Stay Low Volume Brand

Dismissing persistent rumors of the Italian sports car maker building a cheaper entry model sports car offering, the company has passionatly dismissed such claims, revealing that it does not have any immediate plans at offering a model that would be in the entry-level segment.

In a statement to Car and Driver, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann revealed that the company is not planning to make an entry-level sports car that would be below the $200,000 price point. The now dismissed model would've slotted below the Huracan in terms of pricing and would have also targeted top-tier offerings from Porsche as well as the dated but still potent Aston Martin Vantage. While Winkelmann's statement shoots down the appearance of such a model in the near future, he did not completely eliminate the prospect of offering such a model a few years down the road if marketing conditions are suitable for such a move.

"I learned one thing in the automotive industry, to say 'never say never' and it's clear the small segment is very competitive,"Winkelmann revealed. "When we speak about derivatives inside the models then there might be, here and there, some opportunities. But, basically, we're not planning to do a new car for this level." Winkelmann's remarks come amid a stream of recently unveiled entry-level models from rival McLaren, including the $184,900 570S as well as the cheaper 540C, which could have the potential to wield an MSRP that starts as low as $160,000 if it is green-lighted for the U.S. market. Ferrari is also rumored to be working on an entry-level model of its own, possibly resurrecting the Dino marque to fulfill this newfound mission, though it would boast a slightly higher $180,000 price tag.

While Lamborghini has remained committed to maintaining its image as a low-volume sports car maker, it has had experience offering models in this segment with the retired sub-$200,000 Gallardo supercar before it was formally replaced by the $237,000 Huracan. In stark contrast, the flagship Aventador boasts a $400,000 price tag and serves as the brand's flagship offering. It will be curious to see if Lamborghini will eventually change its tune, but don't expect immediate changes on that front anytime soon.
