Jaguar Expected To Unveil F-Pace CUV At Frankfurt

In an announcement released earlier this week, Jaguar has revealed that it intends to formally unveil the production version of its upcoming F-Pace CUV at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, a big step that would see the F-Pace ultimately serve as the first-ever CUV entry fielded by the company in its ongoing quest to obtain more sales in untapped market segments.

First introduced to the world several years ago as the C-X17 concept, the F-Pace—odd name aside—is expected to retain much of the stylistic flair that defined its concept sibling though in a much more toned down package that retains much of its F-Type-derived roots. The interior is also expected to be extremely luxurious, though with the recent strides in interior design that have been made by Jaguar's sister company Land Rover, the F-Pace will have to offer more innovation and exclusivity to retain its own sense of individuality.

It is currently unknown what engines will ultimately power the F-Pace, but expect higher trims to feature an iteration of the company's familiar 3.0-liter supercharged V6 which could produce up to 380 horsepower (a figure also shared with the recently unveiled Jaguar XF). Lower trim levels are expected to make use of the company's upcoming Ingenium line of four-cylinder engines while a range-topping V8 version could also be in the cards with the familiar 5.0-liter supercharged V8 possibly being carried over for F-Pace duty. This would allow the CUV to stand out against rivals such as BMW and Audi which currently have a strong percentage of the luxury CUV market.

Long time Jaguar designer Ian Callum admitted that the F-Pace’s gestation period has been a broader learning experience for Jaguar, "This was our first crossover design, and, yes, it was hard. We found the initial results quite difficult and disappointing. But I reckon we cracked it in the end." That will certainly need to be the case given the F-Pace’s crucial role as the brand’s spearhead into the CUV marketplace. The F-Pace’s success or failure in its overall mission could influence Jaguar's long term plans and whether the company will field more CUV offerings in the future.

The F-Pace's overall dimensions do appear to be on par with rivals with the opulent CUV expected to be a full 15 inches longer than the Range Rover Evoque while retaining that model's seating arraingment. As expected from a proper Jaguar product, the curb weight of the F-Pace is expected to be among the lightest in its segment, thanks to extensive use of aluminium components as well as a variation of the aluminum-intensive chassis that also sees duty in the XE luxury sport sedan.

After its debut in Frankfurt, look for the first examples to make their way into Jaguar showrooms sometime next year with pricing as well as formal performance data being released closer to its formal auto show unveiling.
