Mazda Releases Official 2016 Miata Pricing; Starts from $24,915

In an announcement released early Monday, Mazda revealed that the U.S.-spec version of the recently unveiled 2016 Mazda Miata roadster will have a base price of $24,915, which would make the car $1,000 less than the 2015 Miata; it represents a bold attempt to reach out to frugal enthusiasts looking for value-based fun.

Mazda claims that it will be offering the revamped roadster in three distinct trim levels: Sport, Club, and range-topping Grand Touring. Base sport models will arrive on dealer lots with a standard six-speed manual transmission, LED headlights, USB connectivity, Bluetooth, power door locks, and a leather-wrapped gearshift knob. The Club version caters to spirited driving enthusiasts, and while it will not be as special of a release as the Club version that tolled the 2015 model’s final days in production, the company promises that it will still feature a distinct visual appearance as well as dialed-in driving behavior which should make the Club a blast to drive on twisty roads.

Rod McLaughlin, MX-5 vehicle line manager, highlighted each trim’s distinct mission: "The Sport model is for those desiring a pure, lightweight, unadulterated wind-in-the-hair driving experience. MX-5 Club is for those seeking a more aggressive appearance and driving experience, and Grand Touring models are for loyal MX-5 owners who seek premium amenities and a driving experience that only a MX-5 can deliver."

In a separate statement, Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North America, mentioned the strong interest and positive feedback that the car has received: "As we get closer to the MX-5's summer on-sale date, we're seeing a surge in interest and excitement from enthusiasts and journalists... Already early MX-5 reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and we expect the momentum that MX-5 has garnered to continue to build as drivers get behind the wheel of our fourth-generation sports car."

Those lucky occupants will also get a glimpse of the amount of effort that went into the car's construction when they take their cars to the scales with manual transmission-equipped models checking in at a featherweight 2,332 lbs while automatic transmission models are slightly porkier and weigh in at 2,381 lbs. Both figures are considerable improvements over the 2015 model which weighed between 2,480 lbs and 2,600 lbs. While modern safety features and luxury amenities keep the 2016 iteration from matching the original model’s iconic 2,070 lbs, it is still very light and should translate into sharper handling and acceleration behavior when pushed hard by drivers.

Production of the 2016 Miata has already started in its home Japanese market with deliveries expected to start there sometime in June. Other markets—U.S. included—will eventually see deliveries begin shortly after the Japanese introduction, with the first batch of inventory units possibly arriving in showrooms as early as July.
