Hot Cars and Sizzling Music: The Austin Lonestar Round Up

I recently published a blog post about a well-traveled couple who had a vision. They got into their 1999 Dodge Intrepid, and endeavored to visit every single county in the lower 48 United States. They accomplished their goal, and they are now focusing on Alaska and Hawaii.

When I was writing the article, I shared the fact that I have done a lot of traveling, and I've lived in a lot of places. I guess I have an active imagination, and since I am a ne'er-do-well writer, I can take my talents on the road and find something to do wherever I am. I have never really been chained to a particular desk in a particular place for any length of time.

I have crossed many places off my list over the years, but there is one city that I have always been interested in that I have never set foot in. That place is Austin, Texas.

Music is another passion of mine, and I have seen hundreds of concerts all over the country. I've been playing guitar myself for over 30 years, so Austin's reputation as a guitar-slinger's paradise has always been attention-getting to me.

You have the famous SXSW festival, and, in fact, this year's festival concluded just last weekend. Aside from the big event, there is good live music to hear in Austin every day.

I had Austin on my mind earlier today, and as a car guy I was wondering if there was anything going on in the near future that could lure me into a road trip. As it turns out, there is a killer outdoor car show coming up, plus the event is also a live music festival.

The event of which I speak is called the Lonestar Round Up; this will be the fourteenth annual installment, so these folks know what they're doing by now. The Round Up will take place on Friday, April 17th and Saturday, April 18th, at the Travis County Expo Center, a mere stone's throw from where all the action happens in downtown Austin.

In addition to the massive quantities of classic cars (nothing newer than 1963), there will be a well-attended swap meet, some very hip art exhibits, and plenty of food and refreshments. Wanda Jackson is the headline musician on Saturday, and she alone is worth the price of admission.

To get the full skinny, visit the Lonestar Round Up website, and if you go, I just might see you there.
