Jaguar Unveils 2016 XF Sedan; New Technology And Style Help Make This XF Ready For The Future

Following the recent unveiling of a pair of teaser images, Jaguar has fully unveiled the 2016 Jaguar XF sedan and chose to celebrate the occasion by putting on a stunt that saw the car riding 787 feet along a pair of narrow wires suspended some 59 feet above the Royal Dock in London's iconic Canary Wharf.

While the stunt and the engineering behind it is very impressive, what stands out even more is the fact that the car is still recgonizable as an XF, despite being completly redesigned from the ground up. The exterior styling has been completely updated, and features a pair of slick headlights and a sleeker roofline, as well as a smaller rear end which takes much of its inspiration from the smaller Jaguar XE, especially with its revamped tailights. While we are not big fans of the bigger lower air intakes (a cue that seems to be limited to the uplevel S trim) the overall package is still nicely executed and is a welcome update over its predecessor.

In addition to the new exterior styling, Jaguar engineers designed the car around the company's new modular aluminium intensive vehicle platform which promises much more significant weight savings than before. Jagaur claims that the base rear-wheel drive model loses 132lbs of flab, while all-wheel drive versions shed 265lbs of excess weight. Look for this diet to allow the car to have improved handling and acceleration, as well as increased fuel economy figures. As a neat bonus, while the car loses 0.3 inches of height versus the old XF, the wheelbase has actually grown by two inches which helps improve knee, leg, and headroom in the rear seat, a welcome improvement over the cramped accomodations of the current model.

The cabin of the 2016 Jaguar XF has clearly benifited from the Jaguar XE school of design and features an uncluttered layout, a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel, as well as a revised center console and gauge cluster, There are also fewer buttons than before which helps improve the layout while the infotainment system ditches its slow and dimwitted touchscreen-based software in lieu of a new setup that features Jaguar's InControl Touch technology with the key highlight being the company's InControlApps system that allows better intergration with smartphones and boasts several new features aimed at coddling occupants.

Performance for the 2016 Jaguar XF will come from a pair of 3.0-liter supercharged V6s which mirror what is seen in the F-Type model ineup. This means the base XF will be good for a healthy 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, while higher trim levels benefit from a slightly tweaked variant, which is good for a slightly higher 380 horsepower, but keeps the forementioed torque rating intact. Regardless of which engine flavor is selected, shifting duties will be handled by the company's excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox. Our choice, if we were to buy an XF for ourselves, is the higher spec S trim which brings the tweaked V6 as well as a whole slew of performance-inspired touches into the XF formula which should please enthusiasts looking for more fun from their luxury purchase. A V8powered XF-R version will also be offered though look for that model to arrive sometime after the launch of the base car. A four-cylinder version is also expected to be offered, though look for this iteration to ditch the underpowered and underachieving 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder of the current XF and instead embrace an Ingenium-derived unit that promises to bring better efficency and performance to the table.

Jaguar promises to provide full details as well as other technical figures for the 2016 Jaguar XF at its official debut at the New York Auto Show, April 1st; stay tuned to Autoshopper for the latest developments on the 2016 Jgauar XF as they become avalible.
