Jaguar Teases 2017 XF Ahead Of New York Unveiling, Brings XE technology In Bigger Package

Following rampant reports as well as spy photos of Jaguars next generation XF, the company has released two teaser images ahead of its New York debut that appear to show the XE-themed direction that the big Jag will go as it looks to take on upated versions of rivals such as the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series, as well as new rivals like the Maserati Ghibili.

While the exterior teaser of the XF is somewhat vauge and was shot directly over the car (perhaps with a high-flying camera drone) it does appear to show that the car will boast a large panoramic sunroof, as well as a tweaked design for the powerdome hood. Other changes will include revamped front and rear tailights as well as revised body lines which will most likely be teased when more photographs (preferably shot from ground level) make their way to the surface.

Unlike the exterior shot, the lone photograph of the interior does reveal a little more information and appears to show that the XF will embrace much of the basic design language that first made its debut on its smaller brand sibling, the XE. This includes the cleaner-looking cockpit which features an XE-inspired three-spoke steering wheel as well as a wing-shaped dashboard that adds some visual flair to the cabin's overall presentation. The XE theme continues with the analog instruments and the reworked center console which also help bring the XF up to date with other rivals. A welcome change that will be noticed by Jaguar fans is the shelving of the current model's outdated, clunky, and outright infuriating touchscreen-operated infotainment system. Instead, the car will be offered with the all new InControl Touch infotainment system with all variants including standard smartphone intergration software (AKA InControlApps). Buyers interested in the XE's laser projected heads-up display will be pleased to hear that the unit will also be making its way into the bigger XF, but, like the XE, will be avalible in only higher trim configurations.

Performance hardware for the new XF has been extensively reworked by Jaguar engineers and a morsel of this newfound effort can be found in the revamped platform. The XF will be the second Jaguar offering to be built on the company's new modular platform, which will feature much more aluminum in its construction in an effort to trim unsprung weight, which in turn promotoes better acceleration and fuel economy figures. Currently the 2017 XF will be offered only as a four door sedan, but past rumors suggest that the company is also working on a two-door coupe version that aims to compete with the BMW 6 Series and the E-Class Coupe. It is unknown when the coupe will be unveiled, but look for it to arrive sometime after the initial launch of the four-door model. The car would also retain much of its predecessor's engine options which means the 3.0-liter supercharged V6, as well as the uplevel supercharged V8, will carry over into the new model, though expect the current 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (a favorite target for auto critics, thanks to its lukewarm acceleration) to be replaced by an Ingenium-based offering that promises better fuel economy, but without the sacrifice in performance that is prominent in the current four-cylinder. An M5-fighting XF-R would also be offered, but look for that formidable track weapon to follow the mantra set by its Germanic rivals, and be unveiled a few years after the base car.

Look for more information on the 2017 Jaguar XF to slowly trickle out before its formal debut on March 24th. After its appearnce online, the car will formally greet auto show attendees in the flesh in April at the New York Auto Show. Stay tuned to Autoshopper for more developments on the 2017 Jaguar XF as they become avalible.
