Toyota Distributor Recalls 1,000 Rav4 Models

Yet another Toyota recall... Although their first of the new year isn't as catastrophic as some in recent memory, and technically the issuing body is Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC, maybe Toyota Motor Corp is off the hook on this one. This one affects 2013-2015 Toyota Rav4 models built between June 1, 2013 and December 29, 2014 that were ordered with a trailer light accessory module. The computer program that controls the lights may turn off the electrical lights because it may believe that there is a phantom short circuit that doesn't actually exist. Obviously, if a trailer is being towed with no lights, it can cause a multitude of problems. No brake lights or turn signals can cause plenty of dangers to the driver and other drivers on the road.

Southeast Toyota Distributors will notify owners beginning February 23 of this year and will replace the module with a new one with that has been fixed at no charge to owners.  Read on for the full report...

Report Receipt Date: JAN 16, 2015
NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V011000
Potential Number of Units Affected: 1,140

Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Toyota Rav4 vehicles manufactured June 1, 2013, to December 29, 2014, and equipped with an accessory trailer light module. The software within the module may incorrectly detect an electrical short and preventively turn off the electrical current and the trailer lights.

If the system incorrectly detects an electrical short and turns off the trailer lights while the trailer is being towed at night, there is an increased risk of a crash.

SET will notify owners, and dealers will replace the trailer light module with a new unit with corrected software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 23, 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET's number for this recall is SET-15A.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
