Shelby Rekindles the Magic With the New-old 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra 427

Back in 1964, an aspiring car builder named Carroll Shelby decided to shoehorn a 427ci Ford big block into a Miata-sized British roadster called the AC Ace/Shelby Cobra. His psychotically overpowered little monster then annihilated the almighty Ferrari GTO at the 12-Hours of Sebring. The Shelby Cobra was a “man’s car”, and it was ridiculously fast, even by today’s standards. And to celebrate their founder’s brilliant lack of sound judgement, Shelby American is offering a very special 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra 427. Make no mistake, this isn’t one of those knockoff replicars, it’s a real Shelby Cobra, straight from the Shelby factory. Enzo Ferrari is probably spinning in his grave…

Production of the 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra 427 is limited to just 50 units, and each one is made to order. Buyers can choose a hand-laid fiberglass body for $119,995, or a hand-formed aluminum body for $179,995. Each one is built to the original factory specs, with a 4-inch powdercoated tube steel frame, and coil-over 4-wheel independent suspension. The brakes are upgraded to modern standards, thanks to 11-inch discs with dual-piston Shelby calipers at all four corners. All 50 cars will be delivered with a 1965 MSO/Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (that way they can be registered as actual 1965 Shelby Cobras), and each one will be certified by the official Shelby registry, along with the original 343 production cars. Talk about authenticity!

Aluminum-bodied cars can be ordered in blue, or with a polished finish. Brushed aluminum stripes are optional. Fiberglass cars are finished in Guardsman Blue with Wimbeldon White racing stripes. The interior is upholstered in premium black leather, and, of course, there’s a smattering of 50th Anniversary badges and number plates.

Now, all that sounds fantastic. But, you don’t get an actual 427 engine with the car. It’s just a rolling chassis that you can drop a motor into. Or you can have an authorized Shelby dealer put a motor in it for you. They did say there was a motor being developed for the car, but no details were given.

If you’ve got the skills... and money to handle a real car, then the 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra 427 might be for you. But we’d wait for the ‘official’ motor... even though you just know that all 50 will sell immediately.
